As Staff Psychologist, this critical student services position is primarily responsible for providing confidential counseling/psychological services to students. A strong preference will be given to applicants who demonstrate an interest in and experience with multicultural counseling, and with a specific interest and passion in working with students from historically underrepresented backgrounds.
This generalist position includes areas of focus and responsibility for:
high quality of treatment, measured by overall improvement in symptoms and client self-report;
client satisfaction with treatment and a timely response and provision of services;
assessment of student mental health needs through clinical interview and symptom inventories, as needed;
effective provision of services via individual and group therapy;
appropriate and effective crisis response;
timely and effective on-call support of after-hours mental health needs (approximately one night/week);
providing expert consultation and information to campus partners and department members ;
building relationships and creating opportunities for collaboration with campus partners who support underrepresented students on campus, including ALANA, LGBTQ+ Initiatives, and the Office of International Student Services;
ensuring confidentiality and maintenance of records in compliance with professional standards;
assessing efforts to ensure congruence with stated objectives and counseling outcomes;
providing all services remaining steadfast to professional and ethical standards and compliance with state law;
ensuring continuity of care between on- and off-campus resources with regards to individual student mental health care, including case management;
ensuring effective outreach to historically marginalized communities and related student organizations;
providing professional development in-service opportunities related to cultural competency with Counseling Center staff and other dean of the college partner colleagues; and
possessing respect, understanding, sensitivity and competency with cultural, religious, racial, and socioeconomic diversity and backgrounds.
As part of this role, the incumbent is responsible for the following:
as required, developing and administering specific counseling programs (e.g. group therapy, outreach); and
as required, collaborating with campus partners to extend and promote campus mental health and overall wellness needs;
as required, may be responsible for providing effective advice, counsel, and leadership on University committees.
- Must have completed all requirements (eg- coursework, dissertation and defense, internship) toward completing doctoral degree in clinical or counseling psychology, or a closely-related field, by start date - Licensed as a psychologist in NY or expected to attain license within one year of hire - Multicultural competence and skill in working with students from a diversity of backgrounds - Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Prior experience in working at a college/university counseling center, and/or with college-aged populations - A collaborative spirit of warmth, acceptance, respect, and trust towards colleagues - Well-developed counseling and crisis intervention skills - Self-motivated and self-directed, able to work independently while also contributing positively to a team-oriented environment - Familiarity with short-term models of counseling and psychotherapy - Experience in providing outreach and consultation services to students from underrepresented groups and identities highly desired.
- A master’s degree in counseling, social work, or related mental health field is required, with the necessary degree fulfillment for the doctoral degree in psychology or related field (e.g. Ph.D., Psy.D., Ed.D.)
