The mission of the Counseling Center is to foster students’ psychological development and emotional well-being and to support students in attaining their academic and personal goals. Our multidisciplinary staff work with students, faculty, staff, families, and administration to support students and to create a healthy, diverse, supportive and inclusive multicultural learning community. This is accomplished through counseling and psychotherapy, preventive and educational programming, consultation and outreach. We also strive to contribute to the training and development of multi-culturally competent mental health professionals.
Psychologists in the UMBC Counseling Center are responsible for providing counseling services for students experiencing personal, social, and emotional difficulties that may impede functioning and academic progress. Responsibilities for this position include: initial assessment; short term individual counseling; group counseling; crisis intervention; outreach and developmental programs (including training for paraprofessional staff and student groups) and consultation to the UMBC community; and perform other duties as assigned. Psychologist provide training and supervision for our APA internship and for our externship program. This position will report to the Counseling Center Associate Director and work closely with staff from University Health Services, Career Services, Residential Life, Student Affairs staff, and faculty and staff from across the campus.
Required Minimum Qualifications:
Doctoral degree in Clinical or Counseling Psychology required
Must be licensed or license eligible as a psychologist in Maryland.
We seek candidates who are highly collaborative and self-motivated. The successful candidate will have strong clinical assessment and crisis intervention skills, competency in working with diverse student population, demonstrated skills in supervision and training, and experience in brief therapy and group counseling, experience with mental health promotion and have experience working in a university counseling center with strong student service orientation. Early career and experienced psychologists are encouraged to apply.
Preference will be given to candidates with interest and expertise in groups and/or interest in men’s issues.
